EU Court rejects Hungary's lawsuit over Russian assets set aside to aid Ukraine

The Court of Justice of the European Union dismissed Hungary's lawsuit challenging the decision to use Russia's frozen assets for military aid to Ukraine.
The Court of Justice of the European Union found that the decision to use Russian assets for military aid to Ukraine was made by the European Peace Fund Committee, not by the Council of the European Union.
Therefore, the court ruled that it lacked jurisdiction to hear Hungary's claim.
The court also notes that Hungary did not vote in favor of the decision to allocate aid to Ukraine using frozen Russian assets.
Consequently, the European Peace Fund Committee decided that Hungary should not participate in the decision-making process regarding the use of these funds.
Political decision in EU favor
According to the court's ruling, the committee made a political decision in response to Ukraine's request for assistance.
The court described this decision as strategic for the interests of the European Union. Therefore, challenging the committee's actions also fell outside the court's jurisdiction.
Hungary filed a lawsuit challenging the decision on the use of Russian assets back in 2024.
Hungary decided to expel ten employees of the Russian mission.
Budapest explained this by stating that the diplomats were engaged in activities prohibited under the Vienna Convention.
Moscow has already responded to this move. A spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry promised that the response would be harsh.
Earlier, Hungary agreed to help Germany counter hybrid threats from Russia. Budapest is concerned about the increasing intensity of Russian hybrid activities on European territory.
