EU countries will discuss 'major decisions' on aid to Ukraine next week - Polish Foreign Minister
Next week, the EU Foreign Affairs Council will take place, where extensive decisions regarding aid to Ukraine are expected to be discussed, states Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski on TVN.
He suggested that the next EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting could be dramatic.
“Major decisions will either be made or not regarding whether we are prepared to allocate substantial resources, such as frozen Russian assets, to support Ukraine,” Sikorski said.
He also predicted that the Trump administration could not afford a catastrophic failure in Ukraine.
“Because, as a reminder, it was the sense of failure in Afghanistan that weighed on the Biden administration (US President Joe Biden’s administration – ed.). The situation here remains unresolved. I am in contact with individuals closest to Donald Trump in the field of security,” the minister emphasized.
Frozen Russian assets
IWestern countries are not yet using Russia's frozen assets directly to aid Ukraine.
Only the income from these frozen assets is directed to support Ukrainians. For instance, Ukraine is expected to receive a $50 billion loan from the G7 soon, which will be repaid using these funds.
Meanwhile, Western countries have frozen approximately $260 billion of Russian assets, with most of them located in European Union countries.
