EU countries cannot agree on sanctions against Iran - WSJ
Eight EU countries have called for sanctions against Iran for supplying weapons and financing its troops in the Middle East, reports The Wall Street Journal.
The countries in question are France, Germany, the Netherlands, and five others that last month appealed to the EU's chief diplomat, Josep Borrell.
However, government officials opposed sanctions. In a letter in response to the eight EU countries last week, he stated that their proposal would merge two theaters of military operations, which has unforeseen consequences.
"It remains crucial to carefully assess the potential impact of further measures to avoid that the EU’s engagement could be construed as escalation or to jeopardize other important objectives of EU policy such as containing Iran’s nuclear program which is more urgent than ever,," Borrell's letter said.
