EU Council answers until when Russian assets will be blocked
On Thursday, October 17, EU heads of state and government met in Brussels. As a result of the summit, the European Council gave a clear answer as to when Russian assets will be blocked.
The document states that Russian assets will be blocked until the Russian Federation stops the war and pays compensation.
“Subject to EU law, Russia’s assets should remain immobilized until Russia ceases its war of aggression against Ukraine and compensates it for the damage caused by this war,” the European Council summit resolution says.
Also in the published document, the EU Council emphasized the importance of fulfilling the commitments made at the G7 Summit in Apulia “to provide together with G7 partners approximately EUR 45 billion (USD 50 billion) by the end of the year to support Ukraine’s current and future military, budget and reconstruction needs.”
In this regard, the European Council invites the EU High Representative and the European Commission to join Ukraine in implementing “each of those components.”
In addition, the EU is ready to impose new sanctions against Russia.
“The European Union remains ready to further limit Russia’s ability to wage war, including by further sanctions,” the resolution says.
Also in the same document, the EU Council condemned Russia's continued shelling of Ukraine's critical energy and civilian infrastructure, destruction of port infrastructure, and attacks on commercial vessels. It also called for a rapid increase in military support and accelerated delivery of air defense systems, ammunition, and missiles to Ukraine.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also attended the European Council meeting, where he presented Ukraine's victory plan. After the meeting, the President said at a press conference that most EU leaders supported Ukraine's victory plan and that Ukraine and its European partners would work on it.
