The European Union has scheduled an emergency meeting of EU ambassadors for January 18, following a pledge by US President Donald Trump to impose tariffs over Greenland, according to Reuters.

"Ambassadors from the European Union's 27 countries will convene on Sunday for an emergency meeting after US President Donald Trump vowed a wave of increasing tariffs on European allies until the United States is allowed to buy Greenland," the agency reports.

Reuters reported that the meeting was convened by Cyprus, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the EU, and diplomats said the talks were expected to begin at 5:00 PM.

Background

According to earlier reports, on January 17, US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of tariffs against eight European countries. He said the measures would be implemented in two stages and would remain in force until the issue of Greenland was resolved.

Trump stated that starting February 1, 2026, a 10% tariff would be imposed on all goods shipped to the United States from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland, with the rate set to increase to 25% from June 1, 2026. He added that the tariffs would remain in place until an agreement was reached on what he described as the "full and absolute purchase of Greenland."

Within hours, European leaders reacted by saying they were prepared to deliver a coordinated response to Trump’s tariff threats.
