The European Union has confirmed the withdrawal from the United States from the group investigating Russia's war crimes in Ukraine, Sky News reports.

The outlet states that a statement was received from the International Centre for the Prosecution of the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine (ICPA), confirming the US decision.

"Eurojust has been informed by the US authorities that they will no longer continue their involvement in the International Centre for the Prosecution of the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine (ICPA). The ICPA hosted by Eurojust continues its work in support of the national investigations into the crime of aggression related to the war in Ukraine," the statement said.

Background

It was recently revealed that the US Department of Justice informed European officials of the US decision to exit the multinational group created to investigate the actions of those responsible for the invasion of Ukraine, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The ICPA began operations on July 3, 2023, in The Hague. This unique judicial center, integrated into Eurojust, supports national investigations into aggression crimes related to the war in Ukraine.

ICPA brings together independent prosecutors from various countries who work together daily, exchanging evidence and coordinating a joint strategy for investigation and prosecution. This ensures effective preparation for future trials on aggression crimes, regardless of the jurisdiction in which they are conducted.
