The European Union, by the end of this winter, will be able to produce a million artillery shells promised to Ukraine, states the spokesperson of the European Commission for Defense Industry, Johanna Bernsel.

During today's address, the spokesperson noted that the EU's industry already has production capacities significantly exceeding a million artillery shells.

The EU representative expresses confidence that the bloc will be able to achieve this goal by spring.

However, Bernsel adds that the production process has currently slowed down.

Shells for Ukraine

Last year in March, the defense and foreign ministers of the EU agreed on a plan for joint ammunition procurement. It involves providing Ukraine with 1 million shells over the next 12 months, including contributions from seven countries.

However, in November 2023, the EU informed members that it was unlikely to deliver the promised 1 million artillery shells to Ukraine. This plan was supposed to be fulfilled by March 2024. However, in January of the current year, the EU Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, assured that the bloc could still achieve its goal.

It should be noted that on January 11, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the country still expected to receive the full package of artillery shells and called on EU leaders to press on this matter.
