EU Commissioner calls on EU to prepare for possible war and invest in weapons
Europeans should prepare for a possible war and invest in defense. Strengthening defense capabilities can also improve the EU economy, states Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.
"Anyone who speaks and acts like Putin does not want peace, but intends to continue," she said on the German radio station Deutschlandfunk.
Von der Leyen emphasized the importance of continuing to support Ukraine in the face of war, as well as strengthening the defense capabilities of the European Union. In her opinion, it is necessary to invest more in defense if Europe wants to maintain peace on the continent.
The politician also spoke about Russia's hybrid attacks. She referred to provocations at the Baltic Sea border, the use of migrants as leverage, and attempts to split Europeans on social media.
According to the President of the European Commission, strengthening the EU's defense can also have a positive impact on the economy. As an example, she mentioned the initiative of Poland and Greece to create a joint air defense system.
"It is important that with the billions we invest, we also create good jobs here in Europe," Ursula von der Leyen explained.
EU assistance to Ukraine
The European Union has imposed 13 packages of sanctions against Russia since February 24, 2022. Brussels is currently working on the 14th package.
As you know, the EU has financed the purchase of weapons for Ukraine. In particular, funds were allocated to manufacture one million artillery shells for Ukraine.
In addition, during the war, Ukraine became closer to joining the EU. Ukraine received the status of a candidate for membership in the European Union, and the EU Council recommended starting accession negotiations.
