At least eight European Union countries still import Russian gas in varying volumes. There is no precise data on where the purchased Russian gas is used, The Guardian reports.

According to EU energy spokeswoman Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, several member states still import Russian pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG). The EU does not have data on where the imported gas is being used.

The group of importers includes eight countries:

  • Belgium,

  • France,

  • Greece,

  • Hungary,

  • Netherlands,

  • Portugal,

  • Slovakia,

  • Spain.

Itkonen did not provide figures on the volume of Russian gas imported by each country. The issue carries significant weight as US President Donald Trump continues to pressure EU states to completely halt imports of all energy resources from Russia.

According to media reports, the European Commission will propose banning imports of Russian LNG by January 1, 2027 — a year earlier than previously planned. One of the drivers behind the move is pressure from Trump on the bloc.

Still, there is an uncomfortable reality. Media sources indicate that the European Union is unlikely to be able to phase out Russian oil and gas even by 2027. Any push to do so earlier also appears doomed to fail, including Poland's demand to stop buying Russian energy by the end of 2026.
