On Sunday, December 8, the regime of dictator Bashar al-Assad finally fell in Syria. This is a positive and long-awaited event, states the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.

"The end of Assad’s dictatorship is a positive and long-awaited development. It also shows the weakness of Assad’s backers, Russia and Iran. Our priority is to ensure security in the region. I will work with all the constructive partners, in Syria and in the region," she wrote.

In a commentary on her post, Kaya Kallas added that she is in close contact with the ministers of the region. She also noted that the process of reconstruction in Syria will be long and difficult, so all parties should be ready for constructive cooperation.

This morning, rebel forces entered the Syrian capital Damascus. At the same time, the media reported that Bashar al-Assad had flown out of the country by plane in an unknown direction. It is not known where he is now, but there is speculation that he could have died in a plane crash.

Against the backdrop of the rebels' entry into Damascus, Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed al-Jalali declared his readiness for the process of transferring power. He said he was ready to cooperate with any leadership elected by the people.
