EU calls on UN Security Council to step up pressure on Russia to stop Ukraine war

The European Union has called on the United Nations Security Council countries to apply maximum pressure on Russia to force Moscow to end the war in Ukraine, states Daniel Beck, the Chargé d’Affaires of the EU Delegation to the UN.
“We call on the Security Council to exert maximum pressure for a ceasefire. It would provide space for meaningful talks aimed at ending Russia’s war of aggression and achieving a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace, grounded in the principles of the UN Charter and international law,” the diplomat said.
During the Security Council meeting, he emphasized that Ukrainians pay the highest price nearly every day for Russia’s unprovoked and illegal aggression.
At the same time, Beck reminded the Russian side that deliberate attacks targeting civilians or civilian objects, as well as causing disproportionate harm to the civilian population, constitute war crimes.
The European diplomat also condemned third countries and organizations that provide support to Russia, enabling Moscow to continue its war.
“We urge all countries to immediately cease any direct or indirect assistance to Russia in its war of aggression,” Daniel Beck stated.
Additionally, he emphasized the EU’s unwavering commitment to supporting Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.
“The EU will continue to support Ukraine for as long as it takes,” the diplomat concluded.
EU continues working on new sanctions against Russia
In the second half of July, Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna announced that the EU had already begun work on the 19th package of sanctions against Russia.
His statement came on the same day that EU member states’ ambassadors reached an agreement on the 18th sanctions package.
“We will not settle for halfway measures. Every new package strengthens our message: Ukraine is not alone, and Russia will not go unpunished,” the minister declared.
