EU and Germany in talks with US over new sanctions on Russia

The European Union and Germany are holding talks with all interested parties in the United States regarding new sanctions against Russia, stated German government representative Stefan Kornelius, according to France 24.
According to the German official, both the EU and Germany are engaged in discussions with all players in the US concerning new sanctions in response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
"I cannot comment on these internal American debates, but rest assured that Europe and the (German) federal government are also talking to all the players in the USA," Kornelius said.
US sanctions against Russia
Recently, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the United States and Europe will significantly tighten sanctions against Russia if Russian leader Vladimir Putin refuses to engage in peace talks with Ukraine in a spirit of goodwill.
At the same time, US President Donald Trump said he would move forward with sanctions against Russia if negotiations with Ukraine fail. In his view, the sanctions would be devastating for Russia.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also noted that Washington had given Moscow time to make progress in peace negotiations, but patience is running out, and a sanctions decision is already approaching.
However, following a phone call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on May 19, Trump said he does not currently want to increase sanctions pressure on Russia over its aggression against Ukraine. However, he did not rule out using that mechanism in the future.
As Rubio explained, Trump believes Russia may exit the negotiations if new sanctions are imposed.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has proposed a tough sanctions plan against Russia to the EU, while the US continues to deliberate.
