The meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin should result in something more than just a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarína Mathernová said.

Mathernová noted that not all peace agreements bring peace. History teaches that if agreements are made without those whose lives are at stake, the result is betrayal, not peace.

"Munich 1938. Yalta 1945. Having been born in Czechoslovakia, these are not just dates in a history book for me – they are open wounds. In Munich, my country was carved up without a voice at the table. In Yalta, we were turned over to Stalin in absentia," she recalled.

Mathernová suggested that the world may now be at a similar crossroads. The meeting between Putin and Trump could determine the future of Ukraine and the security of Europe without Ukraine's presence.

According to her, European leaders are currently working urgently to prevent such a scenario. Tomorrow's video conference with the participation of Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is part of these efforts.

Mathernová emphasized that there can be no peace that rewards the aggressor. At the same time, Ukraine and Europe must be together at any negotiating table.

"If the Alaska summit is to mean the beginning of peace, it must deliver more than silence of the guns. It must guarantee Ukraine's security, sovereignty, and the right to decide its own future… This week, the leaders of the democratic world must remember Munich. They must remember Yalta. And they must ensure that history is not allowed to repeat," the diplomat added.

Trump–Putin meeting

Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15.

According to the American leader, he would like to see a ceasefire as a result of such talks.

At the same time, Trump promised that he would not conclude an agreement on Ukraine with Putin, as this should be done by Kyiv and Moscow.
