Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan believes that the North Atlantic Alliance needs to "consider" changing Russia's nuclear doctrine, according to Milliyet.

Erdoğan noted that a war involving the use of nuclear weapons cannot have a positive outcome.

The president also expressed hope that a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia could be achieved as soon as possible, ensuring the peace that all countries are waiting for.

According to Erdoğan, Russia's decision to update its nuclear doctrine is supposedly a response to how others treat it.

"NATO officials should review this step by Russia, and this step should be assessed. First and foremost, Russia has the means to defend itself, it has protective measures, and it must take them. Similarly, we, as a NATO country, must defend ourselves and take measures for our protection," the Turkish leader added.

Russia’s nuclear doctrine

After the US, France, and the UK allowed Ukraine to use Western missiles to strike Russian territory, Russian President Vladimir Putin approved changes to Russia's nuclear doctrine.

These changes significantly lower the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons.

As Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pointed out, this is how the Kremlin leader has chosen to demonstrate that he intends to continue the war.
