Elections in Moldova: Chișinău warns of Russian interference in voting abroad
Moldovan intelligence agencies have requested German authorities to protect Moldovan citizens from potential Russian interference as they prepare to vote in the second round of Moldova's presidential elections on November 3 at polling stations in Germany, reports DW.
According to the newspaper Welt am Sonntag, the government in Berlin has asked the Federal Criminal Police Office of Germany to take this information seriously. Among the potential provocations mentioned are fake reports of bomb threats. A total of 20 polling stations will be operating in Germany for Moldovan citizens.
Moldovan intelligence agencies also perceive a risk of similar actions by Russia in France, the UK, and the US. Washington has previously expressed concerns that Russia may attempt to interfere in the upcoming voting process for Moldovans.
On November 3, Moldova will hold the second round of presidential elections, as Maia Sandu received support from 42.45% of voters, falling short of the required minimum of 50% for victory in the first round.
In the lead-up to the second round of elections, Moldovan citizens have reported receiving anonymous messages containing death threats.
Additionally, around 150 Moldovans have been brought to the country free of charge from Russia to participate in the voting.
