Baked beans are not only a hearty side dish, but also a potential elixir of youth. Eating it regularly can help slow down the aging process in the body, reports the Daily Express.

What you should know

According to plastic surgeon Robert Colgrove, beans have so many health benefits, they’re sometimes called a superfood. They help meet certain dietary needs and are an excellent source of essential vitamins and minerals.

Baked beans contain several minerals, such as magnesium, selenium, and copper, which are powerful antioxidants that protect cells from attacks by free radicals (reactive oxygen species).

An excess of free radicals begins to damage cells and tissues in the body, leading to cell damage, also known as oxidative stress, which causes aging. The body will need more antioxidants, found in beans, to fight the free radicals.

The tomato sauce added to baked beans contains lycopene, a strong antioxidant that helps cells resist aging and lowers blood pressure.

Baked beans are also a good source of zinc, which helps with dry skin by strengthening the skin barrier and increasing collagen and elastin, which help maintain hydration and skin firmness.

Dry skin contributes to aging, as it lacks moisture and elasticity, which can cause fine lines and wrinkles. Therefore, consuming baked beans can increase zinc levels and help prevent aging.

Benefits of beans

A serving of beans weighing 80 g counts as one of the five servings per day.

From a nutritional point of view, beans are a good source of plant-based protein and are also low in fat and calories. They also contain minerals such as iron and zinc and are a good source of B vitamins, such as folic acid.

Including beans and legumes in the diet is also associated with a lower cardiovascular risk and can help balance blood sugar levels.

It is best to eat baked beans together with foods like vegetables, eggs, and slow-release carbohydrates to ensure a good balance of nutrients with a small amount of salt or sugar.

200 g of baked beans (canned in tomato sauce) provides:

  • 162 kcal / 666 kJ
  • 10 g protein
  • 1 g fat
  • 30 g carbohydrates
  • 9.6 g sugar
  • 9.8 g fiber
  • 1.3 g salt
