The Netherlands scrambled two F-35 fighter jets after an unidentified drone appeared in its airspace, according to NOS.

The Ministry of Defence reported that the jets, which were dispatched on Sunday, December 7, in response to an alert about an unknown aerial object, later returned to Volkel Air Base. It was determined that the object was a drone that did not pose an immediate threat and had already left Dutch airspace. Its origin remains unknown.

Air traffic controllers were unable to establish communication with the drone as it entered the Netherlands’ airspace.

The ministry also stated that air traffic was not affected and no flight restrictions were required. The drone ignored all identification channels, but after a brief pursuit, it left Dutch airspace on its own.

This is not the first time the Netherlands has had to scramble jets due to drones. A similar incident occurred on November 22 over Volkel Air Base.

Overall, such cases involving unidentified drones over European cities and military sites are increasing. Just last month, headlines across the EU were filled with reports about UAVs mysteriously appearing over airports and halting flights.
