British boxer Daniel Dubois insists that his defeat to Oleksandr Usyk had nothing to do with the controversial party thrown by his father on the eve of the fight, reports talkSPORT.

Dubois recalls the pre-fight party

The Briton was defeated in the fifth round against Usyk for the title of undisputed world champion on July 19 at Wembley. Before the fight, Dubois arrived late to the stadium because he was held up by a party organized by his father at their family home.

According to media reports, Dubois had to walk from the parking lot. He was also delayed at the stadium entrance because his father tried to sneak several members of his team past security.

Despite this, Dubois refused to admit that the party ruined his preparation, and in an interview with Jim White on Thursday, he took full responsibility for the defeat.

He said the party wasn't to blame. "No, it worked. The first time with AJ and things (parties - ed.) like that," said Dubois, referring to a similar party before his spectacular knockout of Anthony Joshua last September.

Dubois admits what went wrong in the fight with Usyk

"But I don't even want to talk about that too much. That's not why anything went wrong in the fight. I look at myself and look at what I could have done better. But, yeah, it worked the first time with AJ. It's a whole new beginning for me, moving forward," the boxer said.

"Now, I have to change and get it right... I came up against one of the best boxers in the world, and a southpaw in that. Yes, I could have done better, but this is how it goes sometimes. I don't feel deflated or defeated in myself; I just need to learn about myself and improve myself," Dubois added.

Dubois defends his father

After the crushing defeat, several members of the boxing community urged Dubois to distance himself from his father out of concern that he was "too involved" in his son's life and harming his career.

But "Triple D" insists that Dave only looks out for his interests.

"No, I don't think he's too involved. I think he's looking out for me; he's looking out for my best interest. And moving forward, I'm learning as well. And, you know, we're just deciding really what direction we're going to go in for this next step," Dubois Jr. added.

Interestingly, Dubois refused to discuss his next fight but confirmed that his goal is to become a two-time world champion in the heavyweight division.

Dubois names reason for changes in his team

Daniel split with head coach Don Charles and assistant Kieran Farrell at the beginning of August. Instead, Sam Jones has joined the team as an advisor, working alongside the Briton's father.

The media reports that Connor Benn's trainer, Tony Sims, will take charge of the British boxer's team. While Dubois could not confirm the name of his new coach, he explained his decision to end a productive two-year partnership with Charles.

"Don has been great for me; we won a world title, but I was just thinking about how I could improve myself, and that was my decision," Dubois summed up.
