After a workout, the skin needs quick recovery — the first 30–60 minutes determine whether it stays clean, hydrated, and irritation-free. Sweat, sebum, and bacteria that build up during physical activity can clog pores and trigger inflammation if not washed off in time, according to Everyday Health.

Apply sunscreen first

If you’re going outside, apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30. This advice also applies if you work out indoors in a gym with windows that let in light.

When you exercise, you sweat, so make sure your SPF is also water-resistant. The label should indicate how many minutes the product remains effective in moisture.

Apply it to your face, ears, neck, chest, and the back of your neck.

It’s important to shower after a workout

During exercise, sweat itself has almost no smell, but bacteria quickly multiply on the skin and process it — this is what causes odor.

Sweat and skin oils can irritate the skin, especially if they remain for a long time. A shower helps reduce the risk of breakouts and inflammation (for example, on the back or chest).

Washing off sweat and dirt helps the skin breathe and reduces the feeling of stickiness and overheating after training. If you don’t shower, bacteria and odor remain on your clothes and can transfer to other items, bedding, and surfaces.

Be sure to wash your face after a workout

If you don’t shower at the gym, at least wash your face before leaving. Avoid harsh cleansing and choose a gentle cleanser.

A face wipe can be used as a last resort if you’re rushing outside. If you’re prone to acne, a wipe with salicylic acid can help prevent clogged pores that lead to breakouts.

Then apply a lightweight moisturizer to help your skin retain moisture.

Moisturize your skin

After a workout, the skin loses water through sweat, which can make it:

  • Dry or tight
  • More sensitive
  • Prone to redness and breakouts

Moisturizing restores the skin’s water balance, soothes irritation after sweat and friction, and helps maintain an even tone and a fresh look.

How to do it properly:

  • First, wash your face (or at least cleanse it)
  • Apply a lightweight moisturizer to slightly damp skin
  • Avoid heavy, oily products immediately after a workout
