This year’s cold and flu season is hitting much harder than doctors expected, thanks to a new flu virus subtype called subclade K.

Medical Express reported that researchers have found an unexpected, inexpensive way to reduce the risk of severe illness.

How to protect yourself from the flu

A study by the University of Surrey (UK) showed a clear link between vitamin D levels and how seriously people get sick. Adults with a severe vitamin D deficiency were 33% more likely to end up in the hospital with serious respiratory infections such as flu, bronchitis, or pneumonia.

“Vitamin D is vital to our physical well-being. Not only does it keep our bones and muscles healthy, its antibacterial and antiviral properties are also thought to help reduce the risk of respiratory tract infections that can lead to hospitalization,” says lead researcher Ebi Burnot.

How vitamin D works

Data from 36,200 participants revealed that every 10 nmol/L increase in blood vitamin D reduces the risk of hospitalization by 4%. This is especially important for people over 70, whose immune systems and lungs are less resilient.

How much vitamin D do you need?

The National Institutes of Health recommends:

  • Children under 1 year: 400 IU

  • Ages 1–70: 600 IU

  • Age 70 and older: 800 IU

Where to get vitamin D in winter

Since winter sun is limited, experts suggest fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, tuna), egg yolks, and beef liver. Supplements are the fastest way to correct a deficiency and cost only a few hryvnias in pharmacies.

Before taking high doses, get a blood test. Optimal levels are 75 nmol/L or higher. If your level is below 15 nmol/L, you are at the highest risk.

Vitamin D isn’t a substitute for vaccines or handwashing, but it’s a vital part of your immune defense and could save lives this winter.
