With age, the body requires more attention and care, especially after 60. There are two basic habits women should follow daily to support health, maintain energy, and reduce the risk of age-related diseases, according to Eating Well.
Walking for gut health
Gastroenterologist Wendy Lebrett says movement helps with bowel function, and you don’t need a gym membership for it.
“I think walking is a really good way, an underrated way to improve gut health. I always encourage folks to try to take a five to 10 minute walk after eating to help get things moving and to help with bloating and gas,” the doctor says.
In addition, a post-meal walk outdoors provides vitamin D, which supports the immune system and energy levels.
Regular doctor visits
Along with walking, the doctor recommends that women over 60 be open and honest about their health during medical visits.
“Don't be embarrassed to talk about your gut health. I think there is a feeling of shame about talking about poop and diarrhea. Seeking out someone that you feel comfortable talking about your digestive system and symptoms with can certainly help,” she adds.
If you experience any gastrointestinal discomfort, including prolonged constipation, diarrhea, irregular bowel movements, or stomach pain, it is better to consult a doctor.
What to avoid
Sedentary lifestyle. With age, muscle mass and bone density decrease. Lack of movement increases the risk of falls, weakness, and heart disease. Regular moderate activity (walking, light exercise) is essential.
Excess salt and sugar. Salt can raise blood pressure, while sugar increases the risk of type 2 diabetes and excess weight.
Strict diets and under-eating. Severe calorie restriction may lead to muscle loss, weakness, and nutrient deficiencies. At this age, protein, calcium, and vitamin D are especially important.
Self-medicating. Many drugs interact with one another or affect blood pressure, the kidneys, and the heart. Without medical advice, side effects are easy to develop.
