Doctor names 5 diseases that can hinder weight loss
Many people decide to lose the extra weight they gained during Christmas and New Year holidays. However, there are certain conditions that can make it difficult to lose weight, according to the TikTok page of British doctor Asif Ahmed.
What can hinder weight loss
According to the doctor, there are five medical reasons that could hinder weight loss.
People with an underactive thyroid may find it difficult to lose weight. Weight gain can be a general symptom of this condition, accompanied by fatigue, depression, and an inability to tolerate cold.
This is the most common cause of excess weight. Autoimmune thyroiditis is the most frequent issue, which is a chronic inflammatory process in the thyroid gland that leads to insufficient hormone production.
Dr. Ahmed also recommended that women get checked for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), as it can limit weight loss plans.
The symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) usually become noticeable in late adolescence or early twenties. Many women discover they have PCOS when they struggle to conceive.
Dr. Ahmed also mentioned that hormones play a crucial role in weight loss, and any imbalance caused by menopause or low testosterone levels in men can block weight loss.
Excessive levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, can hinder weight loss.
The fifth reason is the most obvious, but it is often overlooked. Antidepressants, antipsychotics, and even some diabetes medications can also interfere with weight loss.
How to start the weight loss process
It is possible to lose weight despite having a certain condition. The key is to first visit a doctor for a thorough examination.
The doctor may then recommend an ultrasound of the thyroid, adrenal glands, and a blood test to assess hormone levels. Depending on the identified cause, dietary recommendations, medication, or surgical treatment may be prescribed.
