Dietitian names one product she will never give her child
Pediatric dietitian Emma Shafqat has shared that she is cool with the junk food she gives her daughter, but there is one food she would never let her eat. The fact is that it can cause nausea or glycemia.
INews tells what exactly this product is.
What you need to know
Pediatric dietitian Emma Shafqat is quite relaxed about all types of food but restricts one specific product due to its potential health risks.
The expert revealed that she allows her eight-year-old daughter to enjoy treats like chocolate, pizza, processed meats, sodas, and sweets 20% of the time.
"I generally follow the 80/20 rule: 80 percent of the time, Olivia eats a balanced, nutritious diet, and the other 20 percent allows for less nutritionally dense foods," the dietitian said.
"I like to let Olivia enjoy everything she likes in moderation, however, I wouldn’t let her have slushy drinks containing the food additive glycerol (E422). High consumption of this additive can lead to side effects such as headaches, nausea, and in rare cases, more severe symptoms like shock and hypoglycaemia," Emma explained.
Food Standards experts warn against giving children under four years old slushie drinks, citing the risk of glycerin poisoning, which is used to prevent the drink from freezing and to maintain its consistency.
Slushie drinks are beverages made from flavored ice and drink but with a more liquid consistency.

Although glycerin poisoning symptoms are usually mild, parents need to be aware of the risks, especially with high levels of consumption.
There may be insufficient information about glycerin poisoning, as parents might attribute nausea and headaches to other factors.
