Renowned Dutch specialist Dick Advocaat has officially stepped down as head coach of the Curaçao national team. The 78-year-old veteran, who created the biggest sensation of the 2026 World Cup qualification, will not travel to the tournament despite having a valid contract, according to Reuters.

Historic achievement and difficult decision

Dick Advocaat took charge of the Caribbean island nation (with a population of just 150,000) in 2024 and, for the first time in its history, led the team to the World Cup finals. Had he remained in the role, he would have become the oldest head coach in World Cup history.

However, just months before the start of the tournament, the coach decided to leave the team. The reason was his daughter’s health condition.

“I have always said that family comes before football. This is, therefore, a natural decision. That said, I will greatly miss Curacao, its people, and my colleagues. I consider qualifying the smallest nation in the world for the World Cup one of the highlights of my career,” Advocaat said.

The 78-year-old coach described the success as the craziest thing he has done in nearly 40 years of coaching.

Who will prepare the team for the World Cup

The new head coach of Curaçao is 63-year-old Dutchman Fred Rutten, known for his work at PSV, Feyenoord, and Germany’s Schalke. He has promised to continue the course set by his predecessor.

“Dick is an icon in world football. It is truly an honour to continue his work. I have spoken extensively with him and his staff and will continue along the same path. Curacao can expect the same dedication and commitment from me,” Rutten said.

The new coach will make his debut in March at a mini-tournament in Australia, where Curaçao will face the hosts and the Chinese national team.
