Dermatologist warns: This popular product might be the worst thing you use

Popular natural deodorants, often marketed as a safe alternative, can have unexpected drawbacks. They may cause irritation, which raises questions about their overall safety, according to HuffPost.
Why natural deodorants can be harmful
Dr. Divya Shokeen, a dermatologist and medical doctor, said that natural deodorants are among the worst products you can buy.
“I actually see an allergy from a natural deodorant almost every other day [in my office],” the doctor noted.
Although these products don’t contain aluminum, parabens, or phthalates—the ingredients found in regular deodorants that many people try to avoid- they can still cause problems.
“Typically, they’re made from natural substances, but ‘natural’ is not a thing. Let’s make that very clear — because poison ivy is ‘natural,’ but you don’t want to rub that [on yourself],” the dermatologist explained.
Which ingredients can cause irritation
Many ingredients used in natural deodorants to fight odor, including baking soda, essential oils, and fragrances, can actually be highly irritating.
Baking soda, known for its odor-absorbing properties, is alkaline. When it comes into contact with the skin, which has a slightly acidic pH, it can disrupt the natural balance and trigger a reaction.
Natural deodorants are not antiperspirants:
-
They do not contain aluminum salts
-
They do not reduce sweat, only mask odor
As a result:
-
Moisture may remain
-
Odor can sometimes appear stronger, especially in heat or during exercise
Even deodorants without baking soda can be problematic for some people.
In the end, there is no strong evidence that natural deodorants are better than regular ones. It’s best to choose a product that feels comfortable on your skin and has a scent you enjoy.
