A shower sponge can harbor many dangers that pose a threat to health. A dermatologist has shared alternatives to this item to help avoid skin problems, according to American dermatologist Aamna Adel.

What to avoid

The expert shared three things she would never do when it comes to hygiene.

Specifically, she advises against using loofah sponges. These items are often kept in the bathroom, where they remain in a damp environment, allowing them to collect bacteria, mold, and mildew. All of these harmful substances can then be transferred to the skin.

Dr. Adel recommends simply washing the body with hands or opting for silicone sponges, which serve as a fantastic alternative.

Moreover, firmer sponges can damage the skin, leaving small cracks.

To avoid any issues, it’s essential to replace sponges every two months and thoroughly dry them after each use. Additionally, to eliminate bacteria, you might consider washing the sponge in the washing machine or soaking it in a solution of water and vinegar.

Why you should have a separate towel for your face

She also advised using separate towels for the body and face, noting,

"I would never use the same towel to dry my groin and legs. This is how fungal infections spread if you have one," the doctor added.

There should be a dedicated towel for the face. Under no circumstances should it be used to dry other body parts, as bacteria from those areas can transfer to the sensitive skin and lead to acne and inflammation.

After washing and drying the face with a towel, it’s crucial not to leave it to dry in the bathroom. In a warm, damp environment, bacteria will proliferate in the fabric, negatively impacting your skin. It's best to hang the towel on a drying rack in a room or on the balcony.

Additionally, the fibers of overly soft towels can be very damaging to the skin and cause significant irritation. It’s better to choose a silk towel - this fabric is very soft and smooth, making it ideal for sensitive skin.
