Denmark on Ukrainian refugees: 'Closer to us culturally than people from Middle East', but must go home after war ends
Ukrainian refugees currently residing in Denmark will have to return to Ukraine after the end of the war, says the Minister of Immigration and Integration of Denmark, Kaare Dybvad Bek.
The minister noted that Denmark views the stay of Ukrainian refugees in the country as temporary, despite Ukrainians being "closer to us (Danish people - ed.) culturally than people from the Middle East".
Kaare Dybvad specifically pointed out that the Ukrainian side has emphasized the desire to bring back everyone who left due to the full-scale invasion by Russian terrorists. In this regard, Copenhagen "has to respect this."
Ukrainian refugees in Denmark
As of December 1, Denmark has registered more than 30,278 Ukrainians. The country has a special law in effect until March 2025, guaranteeing Ukrainians residency permits and access to the job market beyond the general rules for asylum seekers.
Call for Ukrainians abroad
Quoting the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Rustem Umerov, German publications WELT and Bild claimed that the Ministry of Defense allegedly plans to call Ukrainians living abroad for military service. It was mentioned that this is an invitation, but those who do not comply may face sanctions, which are currently under discussion.
Later, the Ministry of Defense clarified the minister's statement, stating that there is no discussion on the agenda regarding the conscription of men from abroad.
