Denmark completes investigation into Nord Stream gas pipeline blasts, following Sweden's lead
The Copenhagen Police and the Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET) have completed their investigation into the bombing of the Nord Stream gas pipelines, according to the Copenhagen Police.
"In Denmark, there are no sufficient grounds to initiate a criminal case in connection with the explosions on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines, so the Copenhagen police have decided to complete the criminal investigation of these explosions," the statement says.
The Copenhagen Police, in cooperation with PET, investigated the explosions in September 2022 on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines that occurred outside Danish territorial waters.
"Throughout the investigation, the Danish authorities cooperated with the relevant foreign partners. The investigation was both complex and comprehensive," the statement says.
As a result of the investigation, the authorities concluded that there was a deliberate sabotage of the gas pipelines. However, according to the investigation, Denmark does not have sufficient grounds to initiate a criminal case.
"Therefore, the Copenhagen police decided to close the criminal investigation into the explosions. PET continues to monitor the development of the threat situation and, together with other relevant authorities, is taking measures deemed necessary to protect Denmark's critical infrastructure," the statement says.
Nord Stream
"Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2, each of which consists of two pipes, were built by Russia's Gazprom to pump 110 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year to Germany. However, Nord Stream 2 was never put into operation due to the Russian invasion, and Nord Stream 1 was shut down by Gazprom in the summer of 2022.
Three of the four pipeline branches were blown up on September 26, 2022.
Investigations indicate that Russian warships were highly active near the Nord Stream pipelines just before the explosion.
The media also reported that a private group of Ukrainian saboteurs on a yacht may have been behind the explosion, but this version is not being considered seriously.
This month, Sweden announced that it was finalizing its investigation into the Nord Stream explosions.
