This week, Denmark's Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen will meet with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. These will be the first high-level talks between the countries since US President Donald Trump's statements regarding Greenland, the Financial Times reports.

According to the media resource, Rasmussen and Rubio will hold talks on the sidelines of the NATO Foreign Ministers' meeting in Brussels, which will take place on April 3.

At the same time, FT sources claim that due to the strained relations between Copenhagen and Washington, the meeting may be canceled.

According to official sources, diplomatic contacts between the US and Denmark are currently minimal. The US State Department also declined to comment on the possibility of a meeting this week.

In January, Rasmussen and Rubio had a 20-minute phone conversation.

Trump's attempts to acquire Greenland

After Trump won the US presidential election, he again started discussing the purchase of Greenland. In his view, US control over the island is necessary for security reasons.

However, in Greenland, which is a self-governing territory of Denmark, people opposed joining the US. Protests against Trump's policy erupted there. Denmark also rejected the idea of the US purchasing the island.

Recently, US Vice President JD Vance visited Greenland with his wife. During his trip, Vance stated that the US would not increase the number of troops in Greenland for now, but would focus on its security.

Trump himself stated that he was confident the US would take control of Greenland. The US President believes this will happen 100%. Trump also hinted that his country might try to gain control of Greenland even by military force.
