House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries has officially announced his intention to run for Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Axios reports.

"I write to humbly request your support in connection with my candidacy to serve as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives. We must now deliver the dramatic change the American people are demanding in the majority," Jeffries wrote in a letter to his colleagues.

He added that "every single member of our majority will play a meaningful role" and said his goal was to give House Democrats the opportunity to "act decisively in three key areas." These include:

  1. Affordability

  2. Accountability

  3. American values.

The outlet reports that although some newly elected Democrats and representatives from "red" districts have declined to confirm their support for Jeffries as speaker, he is not expected to face serious opposition.

The media explains that the Democrats' victory in the November 3 House elections will further shield Jeffries from potential dissent within his caucus.

His senior leadership team is also expected to be elected unopposed.

Background

As earlier reported, 56-year-old Brooklyn lawmaker Hakeem Jeffries could become Speaker of the House on January 3, when the newly elected Congress holds its leadership vote. He could become the first Black Speaker in US history, replacing Republican Mike Johnson if elected.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz believes US President Donald Trump will govern by bypassing Congress after the Democrats' victory in the midterm elections.
