Viola Amherd, who serves as the head of the Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport in Switzerland, has become the President of the country for a year, according to The Local.

The 61-year-old Amherd was the first female Defense Minister of Switzerland. She replaces Alain Berset as the President, who held the position throughout 2023.

It's worth noting that the Swiss President doesn't hold substantial powers. The position rotates annually on January 1st. The head of state becomes one of the members of the Federal Council (government) on a rotational basis.

The President represents the country abroad, chairs Federal Council meetings, and acts as a mediator in case of disputes.

Switzerland - an ally of Ukraine

Switzerland is one of Ukraine's allies following the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion.

Despite not providing military assistance to Ukrainian soldiers, the country assists in humanitarian matters and supports the European Union's sanctions policy against Russia.

Recently, Switzerland announced its participation in the 12th package of sanctions against Russia.
