DeepSeek halts new user registrations: Reason revealed

The Chinese tech startup DeepSeek reported a cyberattack that caused registration issues for users on its website, the news agency AP News reports.
The company, whose AI-based chatbot has created a buzz in the tech world, stated that its services had been subjected to "large-scale malicious attacks." However, registered users were still able to log in normally, according to DeepSeek.
DeepSeek gained significant attention in the AI field last month when it launched a new AI model, which the company claimed was comparable to similar models developed by American companies, including OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT.
Moreover, DeepSeek's development proved more cost-efficient in utilizing expensive Nvidia chips for training the system on huge troves of data. Earlier this year, the chatbot became more accessible following its release on Apple's and Google's app stores.
By Monday, DeepSeek's AI assistant ranked first among free apps on Apple's App Store for iPhone.
DeepSeek was founded in Hangzhou, China, in 2023. That same year, the company released its first large AI language model.
As previously reported, DeepSeek has overtaken ChatGPT and shocked the tech sector.
