The death toll in Poltava has risen to 54 following the September 3 missile strike. More people may still be trapped under the rubble, according to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES).

"The death toll has increased to 54 as a result of the Russian strike on an educational institution in Poltava. Another 297 people were injured," the report says.

According to SES, search and rescue operations are ongoing with safety considerations in mind.

"There's a chance that up to five more people remain under the debris. So far, 1,760 tons of construction debris have been cleared and removed," rescuers added.

Russian missile attack on Poltava

Russian forces attacked Poltava on September 3 with ballistic missiles. The strike partially destroyed one of the buildings of the Communications Institute in Poltava.

As of September 4, 53 dead had been reported in Poltava following the Russian strike. Additionally, 271 people were injured. Firefighters rescued 25 people, 11 of whom were pulled from under the rubble.
