Deadly Russian missile and drone attack hits cities across Ukraine: What happened overnight

The Russian attack on Ukraine unfolded in several waves. According to monitoring channels, Russian forces used ballistic missiles, Zircon hypersonic missiles, Kh-101 and Kalibr cruise missiles, as well as Shahed attack drones.

The first wave began shortly after 1:00 a.m. local time. A second wave of cruise missile strikes targeting western Ukraine followed after 3:35 a.m. At around 5:00 a.m., Russia launched another ballistic missile strike on Kyiv, and at approximately 5:30 a.m., a new wave of missiles was launched from the north.

Zelenskyy: Russia launched more than 70 missiles and 280 drones

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia used more than 70 missiles, many of them ballistic, and more than 280 attack drones during its overnight assault on Ukraine.

According to Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian Air Force and air defense units destroyed more than 260 drones, while Ukrainian combat aircraft and mobile fire groups shot down a significant number of cruise missiles.

The president said that, as of now, eight people have been confirmed killed in the Russian attack. The deadliest strike occurred in the village of Radushne in the Dnipropetrovsk region, where a ballistic missile destroyed the home of a large family. Rescue operations are also continuing in Lviv after a residential building was hit.

Kyiv and the surrounding region, the Dnipropetrovsk, Lviv, Poltava, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, Sumy, Vinnytsia, Cherkasy, and Ivano-Frankivsk regions all came under attack overnight. Dozens of homes, civilian businesses, and infrastructure facilities were destroyed or damaged.

Zelenskyy said the latest attack once again demonstrated Ukraine's critical need for modern air defense systems and anti-ballistic missile capabilities. According to the president, delays in delivering such assistance directly result in civilian casualties and the destruction of infrastructure.

Ukrainian Air Force explains what made the attack unusual

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the attack was notable for the simultaneous use of multiple types of aerial weapons launched from different directions, including a large number of ballistic and cruise missiles.

The main targets were the Kyiv and Lviv regions. The Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy, Vinnytsia, Poltava, Mykolaiv, and Ivano-Frankivsk regions also came under attack.

In total, Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 55 of the 74 missiles launched and 265 of the 284 drones, including:

• 0 of 4 Zircon/Oniks anti-ship missiles;

• 1 of 9 Iskander-M, S-400, or KN-23 ballistic missiles;

• 54 of 61 Kh-101 and Kalibr cruise missiles;

• 265 of 284 Shahed attack drones (including jet-powered variants), Gerbera drones, Italmas drones, and Parodiya decoy drones.

At the same time, the Ukrainian Air Force recorded impacts from three anti-ship missiles, six ballistic missiles, two cruise missiles, and 17 attack drones at 20 locations. Information on the fate of another eight missiles is still being verified.

Kyiv

A 31-year-old man was killed, while two others, aged 30 and 53, were injured.

In the Obolon district, a fire broke out in market stalls near the Pochaina metro station. In the Sviatoshyn district, fires erupted in a garage complex, where the victim was found, and in a five-story non-residential building.

Across the city, residential buildings, a market, a garage complex, warehouse facilities, and vehicles were damaged.

Kyiv region

Five people, including one child, were injured.

In the village of Skybyn in the Brovary district, a two-story private house was partially destroyed, and two neighboring buildings were damaged. Rescue workers pulled three injured people from beneath the rubble.

Dnipropetrovsk region (outskirts of Kryvyi Rih)

Russian forces struck the home of a large family in the village of Radushne with a ballistic missile. Six people were killed, including the parents and three children — a six-year-old girl and two boys aged 11 and 17. Two other children were rescued alive from beneath the rubble.

Eight people were injured, including two boys aged 6 and 15, as well as an 84-year-old woman who remains in critical condition.

Two private homes were completely destroyed, while another five were damaged. Several fires were extinguished. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, and authorities believe people may still be trapped beneath the rubble.

Lviv

The heaviest damage was reported at two high-rise residential buildings on Patona Street and Vyhovskoho Street. A missile scored a direct hit on the apartment building on Vyhovskoho Street.

"The missile's warhead, which failed to detonate, has already been rendered safe. The next step is to remove it safely," Lviv Mayor Andrii Sadovyi said.

More than 20 residential buildings, a school, and two kindergartens were damaged.

At least 31 people were injured, including 14 who required hospitalization. Three children were among the injured.

The number of casualties could still rise, as rescue workers continue searching for survivors beneath the rubble. Residents are being evacuated from a five-story apartment building by crane because the stairwells have been blocked.

Rescue workers have pulled nine people alive from the rubble of the five-story building, most of whom were hospitalized.

According to preliminary information, the oldest injured person is 93 years old, while the youngest is a six-year-old boy who was hospitalized with fractures to both legs.

Search and rescue operations are continuing, and authorities believe up to three more people may still be trapped beneath the rubble.

Poltava region

One person was killed after a drone struck warehouse facilities belonging to a private company in the Poltava district.

Russian forces also attacked a Nova Poshta (Ukraine's largest private parcel delivery company) terminal, where the fire has since been extinguished. In the Lubny district, drone debris fell onto a roadway.

Vinnytsia region

Reports circulated online claiming that the Vinnytsia region had come under its first-ever wartime strike by Zircon hypersonic missiles. However, this information has not been officially confirmed.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported cruise missiles heading toward the region, including in the direction of the city of Ladyzhyn.

Burshtyn

Explosions were also reported in the Ivano-Frankivsk region. The Ukrainian Air Force reported a missile heading toward Burshtyn, home to a major thermal power plant.

According to the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Military Administration, Ukrainian air defenses were active in the area, and no casualties or damage were reported.

Zhytomyr region

One agricultural enterprise in the Korosten district came under attack. The blast wave damaged residential buildings and social infrastructure facilities.

Three children were hospitalized.

Sumy, Kropyvnytskyi, and other regions

Monitoring channels and the Ukrainian Air Force reported strikes by high-speed targets, described as Zircon hypersonic or ballistic missiles, targeting Sumy and Kropyvnytskyi. However, there has been no official confirmation of those reports.

Rivne was also targeted by drones, with local authorities reporting that the aerial targets were shot down. Train services in the Zhytomyr region were temporarily delayed because of Shahed drone activity. Attack routes were also recorded over the Chernihiv and Cherkasy regions, as well as toward the city of Dnipro.

Poland issues air alert after unidentified object falls

As Russia's attack on Ukraine, particularly western regions, unfolded overnight, Poland issued an air alert. The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces scrambled fighter jets and placed air defense units on heightened readiness.

In the Lublin Voivodeship (an administrative region in eastern Poland), between the villages of Tarnawa-Kolonia and Tokary, police discovered a crater and scattered debris from an unidentified object after residents reported hearing a loud explosion.

The area has been secured, and an investigation is underway. According to the Polish news outlet Wiadomości, the crater is approximately 10 meters (33 feet) in diameter.
