Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen wants to hold talks with US President-elect Donald Trump after he announced his desire to buy Greenland, Politico reports.

“We have suggested a conversation [with Trump] and I expect it will take place,” Frederiksen said.

She does not expect the dialogue to take place before Trump's inauguration on January 20. According to the Danish Prime Minister, Trump has not yet responded to the proposal.

At the same time, Frederiksen said that there is "no reason to believe” that the future president plans to invade Greenland and emphasized the “close cooperation” between the two NATO allies.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen also downplayed Trump's threats.

“You can take Donald Trump seriously without taking him literally,” he said.

Trump's encroachment

After winning the election, Donald Trump said he would like to buy Greenland. He also threatened to return the Panama Canal to US control and make Canada the 51st US state.

The eldest son of the US president-elect recently visited Greenland and posted photos on social media of locals wearing Trump hats.

Against the backdrop of Trump's encroachments, Denmark has begun to strengthen Greenland's defense. The EU, in turn, called for respect for the independence of the union's member states, including Denmark. Meanwhile, the island itself has declared its desire for independence.
