The United States is considering a possible military operation in Cuba aimed at overthrowing the government, although Washington still prefers a diplomatic approach, reports Politico.

According to sources cited by the outlet, the United States could delay a full leadership transition in Cuba, although some senior officials would still be required to step down.

Another source said the Trump administration is considering options involving the use of "kinetic force," meaning military options to topple the government.

This comes amid political pressure from the influential Cuban-American community in Florida, which is urging Trump to fully overthrow Cuba's communist leadership, while the Trump administration, it appears, may be willing to settle for less.

The source said Washington is currently still focusing primarily on diplomacy and persuading the regime to introduce various changes, particularly in the economic sphere.

Politico added that US President Donald Trump and other administration officials have emphasized that they could currently accept any agreement involving economic reforms.

Trump intends to take control of Cuba

In March, the US President said Washington could soon reach an agreement with Cuba or take other measures regarding the island.

Already on May 1, Trump said the United States intended to take control of Cuba "almost immediately." He also said that on the return route from Iran, one of the US aircraft carriers could approach the island, after which people would say: "Thank you very much, we give up."

Also, reports emerged on May 1 that Trump imposed sanctions on high-ranking Cuban officials, although the list of individuals has not been disclosed.
