The administration of US President Joe Biden may change its position on strikes deep into Russia with long-range weapons. The next few weeks may be crucial, says Yehor Chernev, MP, Deputy Chairman of the National Security and Defense Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

He notes that the US election was a conditional safeguard against drastic political steps.

“Now that the US election has passed, I do not rule out the possibility that there will be a change of position in the Biden administration's cabinet. Moreover, he has nothing to lose. He has two months left to transfer power,” Chernev says.

However, the MP emphasizes that the transfer of power in the United States does not take place on the last day of Biden's term, but gradually. As representatives of the Donald Trump administration are already entering, there may be certain restrictions on decision-making.

“Although the closer to the inauguration, the more restrictions there will be. But for now, Biden's office has freedom of action. I think that the next few weeks should be crucial, and indicative of how the Biden administration will act. And, in principle, Trump's position on Ukraine will be clear,” the MP says.

Chernev adds that Trump's attitude can be seen in his statements, proposals, and public speeches before the Republican takes office.

Restrictions on use of weapons

The United States and the United Kingdom have provided Ukraine with long-range missiles. However, the partners have limited the possibilities for Ukraine to use the weapons. Ukraine is not allowed to strike deep into the territory of Russia with Western missiles.

The partners are concerned that such a move could lead to an escalation.

The Pentagon also stated that Russia has allegedly moved targets beyond the range of the ATACMS missiles provided to Ukraine by 300 kilometers from the border
