The court has paused the case against former US President Donald Trump regarding the Capitol riots. The prosecutor stated that the circumstances should be carefully assessed, The Guardian informs.

On November 8, Judge Tanya Chutkan approved a request from Special Counsel Jack Smith's office to pause proceedings in the case concerning charges related to an attempt to overturn the 2020 election results.

The news agency explained that the special prosecutor asked the judge to pause the case against the newly elected president in order to "assess the unprecedented circumstances" in which the office has found itself.

In a statement, Smith noted that "as a result of the election," the prosecution "respectfully requests that the Court vacate the remaining deadlines in the pretrial schedule to afford the Government time to assess this unprecedented circumstance."

Smith's team stated that it will inform the judge of the "results of its deliberations" by December 2.

Trump’s Capitol Riot case

Legal proceedings against Donald Trump related to the events of January 6, 2021, focus on his attempts to prevent the certification of the 2020 election results and, allegedly, inciting riots near the Capitol.

In 2023, Special Prosecutor Jack Smith brought charges against Trump in several conspiracies, including obstruction of official Congressional procedures.

According to the indictment, Trump, among other things, sought to replace legitimate electors with false ones, persuading officials that there was widespread election fraud.

It is worth noting that earlier this summer, a Washington court resumed consideration of the criminal case against Trump.
