Planets suitable for life may form naturally - without a rare coincidence of cosmic circumstances. Planetologists reached this conclusion after conducting over 1,000 computer simulations of terrestrial planet formation, according to SciTech Daily.

Abandoning old constraints

For the past 30 years, scientists modeled planet formation using a specific scheme that pre-adjusted the final result to match the well-known parameters of the Solar System.

Since the exact initial conditions and distribution of objects in the primordial protoplanetary disk are unknown, a team of scientists decided to start simulations from scratch.

Key features of the new approach:

  • Use of randomized initial conditions without reference to the known location of planets;
  • Calculation of system development exclusively according to the laws of physics;
  • Modeling of the late stages of planet formation in a protoplanetary disk with an uneven distribution of solid matter (planetesimals and planetary embryos).

Thanks to modern equipment, the time required for such complex simulations has been reduced from 6–8 months to 6–8 weeks on ordinary laptops.

Is Earth a natural result of evolution?

The calculation results showed that the formation of Earth at a distance of one astronomical unit from the Sun is a natural consequence of the evolution of our system.

Even slight changes in initial conditions significantly affect the final composition of the planetary system, yet Earth analogs form regularly.

Simulation results for other planets:

  • Venus appears in approximately 28% of cases and retains its orbit—sometimes within the star's habitable zone, sometimes slightly outside it.
  • Mars repeatedly emerges as a small object near its current orbit.

Impact on the search for extraterrestrial life

Given the prevalence of Earth-sized planets, including small super-Earths, in the habitable zones of Sun-like stars, scientists suggest that Earth-type life may be common in the Universe.

Although current technologies do not yet allow for the direct detection of life on distant cosmic objects, these studies help us understand the physical processes of forming habitable planets.

Scientists emphasize: there is no reason to consider the appearance of Earth an exceptional accident - it is not unique.
