Consequences of the overnight attack: fire in Odesa and downed drones near Kyiv
During the large-scale overnight air attack on July 19, explosions were heard in Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, Kropyvnytskyi, Kyiv, and beyond. The anti-aircraft defense system was active against enemy drones and missiles.
Signals of aerial threats were heard shortly before midnight, and soon the alarms spread to many regions.
The Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine had warned of the threat of enemy missile attacks, as well as the use of strike UAVs.
Explosions in Odesa
During the alarm, explosions were heard in Odesa, and the air defense system was active in the region. Oleh Kiper, the head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration, urged citizens to stay in shelters and follow instructions. According to the Armed Forces, repeated launches of Kalibr cruise missiles from the Black Sea were recorded.
In the early hours, there were additional explosions in Odesa. The military then reported new launches of Kh-22 cruise missiles from the south.
According to local media, a fire broke out at a fireworks warehouse in Odesa. Videos showing the aftermath of the air attack were published online. However, it is worth noting that Natalia Humeniuk, the head of the Joint Press Center of the Defense Forces of the South, has not officially confirmed that the fire is related to the shelling, according to her comment to RBC-Ukraine.
Local press reports also indicate that a house was destroyed and a cemetery in the city was hit as a result of the attack.
Explosions in Kyiv and the operation of the Air Defense System
In the morning, the Air Defense System was active against enemy targets in the Kyiv region and its approaches. The Kyiv Regional Military Administration reported an attack by the enemy using Shahed-type drones.
The Mayor of Kyiv, Vitalii Klytschko, announced through his Telegram channel that explosions were heard in the capital.
Later, the Chief of the Kyiv City Military Administration, Serhiy Popko, revealed that all kamikaze drones had been shot down in the region and on the approach to Kyiv.
In the morning, the Chief of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, Ruslan Kravchenko, announced that the air alarm had been sounded several times and lasted almost the entire night, and the Air Defense System was active in the region.
"No hits were recorded, and there are no casualties. According to preliminary information, there is no information about the falling debris. Operational groups continue to work to identify possible damage," the official said.
Drones attacking Zhytomyr region
According to Vitaliy Bunechko, the head of the Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration, this morning the invaders attacked the region with kamikaze drones. There is destruction.
"Preliminary information indicates that an infrastructure facility was damaged and there is damage to private households," the official said.
All emergency services are working at the scene.
"At the moment, there is no information about casualties, and information regarding the extent of the damage is being clarified," he added.
Explosions in Zaporizhzhia
Around two in the morning, explosions were also heard in Zaporizhzhia, and the air defense system was active against aerial targets of the enemy in the region.
Official information about the consequences of the enemy attack has not been reported by authorities yet.
Explosions in Kropyvnytskyi
In the morning, explosions were heard in Kropyvnytskyi during the air alarms, which may have been caused by the operation of the air defense system.
Currently, local officials and emergency services have not reported any consequences.
Downing of enemy drones over the Sumy region
In the morning, the Sumy Regional Military Administration reported that overnight, the Air Defense System of the Armed Forces destroyed four Shahed UAVs in the region.
Kherson and Zhytomyr regions attacked by "Shahed" drones
According to the head of the Kherson Regional Military Administration, Oleksandr Prokudin, impacts were recorded in the Shumenskyi microdistrict of the city around 2:00 am. The strikes caused a fire in a cultural center and damage to a two-story building.
Emergency services managed to rescue an 89-year-old woman who was trapped under the rubble of her own home. Medical assistance was provided to the injured woman on-site, and her condition is satisfactory.
Meanwhile, the Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration reported an attack by "Shahed" drones. Preliminary reports indicate damage to an infrastructure facility and private households.
How did Russia attack Ukraine last night?
According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russian occupying forces attacked Ukraine from the southern direction during the night of July 19, using air, ground, and sea-based cruise missiles, as well as Iranian "Shahed-136/131" strike UAVs.
Critical infrastructure objects and military facilities were targeted, with the main direction of the strike being the Odesa region.
In particular, the enemy carried out the following attacks within a few minutes:
- 16 sea-based cruise missiles "Kalibr," presumably launched from the small rocket ship "Ingushetia" and the frigate "Admiral Essen" from the Black Sea waters;
- 8 Kh-22 cruise missiles from long-range Tu-22M3 aircraft from the Black Sea waters;
- 6 "Oniks" cruise missiles from the coastal missile system "Bastion" (Crimea);
- 1 guided aviation missile Kh-59 from a Su-35 fighter jet from the Black Sea waters;
- 32 "Shahed-136/131" strike UAVs from the Chauda training ground (Crimea) and Primorsko-Akhtarsk (Krasnodar Krai). "According to the results of the combat work of the Air Defense and Air Force of Ukraine and other components of the Defense Forces of Ukraine, 37 aerial targets have been destroyed," reported the Air Force command.
Specifically, the targets destroyed include:
- 13 "Kalibr" cruise missiles;
- 1 guided aviation missile Kh-59;
- 23 "Shahed-136/131" strike UAVs.
The Kh-22 and "Oniks" missile strikes were aimed at the infrastructure of the Odesa region.
Details of the powerful attack on Odesa and other southern regions
According to the spokesperson of the Operational Command "South," Vladyslav Nazarov:
- The missile X-59, which was shot down, fell in one of the neighborhoods of Odessa, creating a large crater. Several buildings in the vicinity were damaged by the blast wave. Three civilians were injured.
- The enemy targeted the seaport and critical infrastructure with "Onyx" and X-22 missiles. They hit the grain and oil terminal, damaging storage tanks and loading equipment, causing a fire.
- In the Odesa region, industrial facilities were hit, where a civilian employee was injured, and two warehouse buildings were affected in different locations, one containing tobacco and the other fireworks. Firefighters in Odesa are extinguishing a fire covering an area of over 3,000 square meters.
- Eight "Shahed-136" drones were shot down in the sky above Odesa.
- As a result of the explosive wave caused by the destruction of enemy targets in residential complexes in Odessa, several multi-story buildings were damaged. At least six residents of Odesa, including a 9-year-old boy, sought medical assistance.
- In Kherson, the enemy targeted the cultural palace and severely damaged a dormitory with "Shahed" missiles. One civilian was injured.
- Two more "Shahed" drones were shot down over Mykolaiv region. Due to the falling debris, recreational infrastructure objects in the coastal zone of the Kobleve community caught fire and were damaged, and two civilians were affected.
Firefighters in Mykolaiv region came under fire while extinguishing a fire
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, as a result of enemy attacks on the Kobleve community, destruction and fires occurred in recreational infrastructure objects in the coastal zone.
"The fire spread over a significant area, so firefighters managed to control the fire even during a subsequent wave of enemy attacks," the statement said.
Nearby buildings and a local fire department vehicle were damaged by the blast wave. Currently, there is information about two injured individuals, one of whom has been hospitalized. Firefighters' personnel were unharmed.

The footage displayed the consequences of the occupiers' attack on the "Akvarel" residential complex.
Meanwhile, according to Odesa Mayor Gennadiy Trukhanov, residential buildings were damaged, and windows were shattered in the Peresyp and Kyiv districts as a result of the attack. The Slobidske cemetery was also damaged.
Preliminary reports indicate no casualties. Among the injured is a 9-year-old child who received all necessary medical assistance.
The Odesa mayor also referred to the Russians' nighttime attack on the city as "one of the most horrifying nights."
"The Russians attacked Odesa with various types of missiles and 'Shahed' drones. We do not recall such a scale of attack since the beginning of the full-scale invasion," Trukhanov noted.
Rescuers show photos of the aftermath of the attack in Odesa
The State Emergency Service showcased footage of the efforts to eliminate the consequences of the enemy strike on Odesa.
"Odesa. Brave rescuers are dealing with the aftermath of the Russian terror. Civilian objects have come under enemy strikes again. Five people were affected. The State Emergency Service has deployed 140 emergency responders and 36 units of equipment," said Serhiy Kruk, the head of the State Emergency Service.
