Congress leaders found solution that сan help postpone shutdown
Congressional leaders have reached an agreement on several bills within the budget resolution, which will allow them to avoid partial shutdowns of several departments, according to Politico.
According to Politico, leading members of Congress have reached a temporary agreement on bills related, among other things, to fund the Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
At the same time, the shutdown of the Pentagon and the departments of homeland security, labor, health, and education has been postponed until March 22. The Senate and the House of Representatives have only two days to pass temporary resolutions, otherwise a partial government shutdown could occur on March 2.
A shutdown in the US occurs if Congress fails to approve funding for federal agencies and the president does not sign it into law.
What preceded this
On February 27, US President Joe Biden convened leaders of Congress at the White House. The main topics of the talks were to avoid a shutdown and assist Ukraine.
Following the meeting, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said that House spokesperson Mike Johnson had ambiguously indicated a desire to avoid a shutdown. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries also noted after the talks that there is optimism about avoiding a shutdown.
It was also previously reported that on January 19, Biden signed a temporary budget bill that allowed the shutdown to be postponed until the end of February.
