Biden's meeting with Congress leaders on Ukraine bill: First details emerge
Leaders of Democrats and Republicans in the US Congress say that the President of the United States of America, Joe Biden, has concluded a meeting at the White House with congressional leaders regarding aid to Ukraine and government funding to avoid a shutdown, writes Politico.
Shutdown avoidance
The leader of the Democrats in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, said at the end of the meeting that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, made it clear that he wanted to avoid a shutdown (temporary shutdown of the American government since the budget was not passed on time).
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries also said after the talks that there is optimism about avoiding a shutdown.
Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said keeping the government open was a priority in talks with Biden.
Aid to Ukraine
Schumer also said that new funding for aid to Ukraine has become an "intense" component of negotiations in the White House.
According to the leader of the Democrats in the Senate, Speaker Johnson was urged to bring to the vote a bill with money for our country.
"It's in his (Johnson's - ed.) hands," Schumer added.
What preceded
Today, on February 27, US President Joe Biden gathered the leaders of the Congress in the White House. Avoiding a shutdown and helping Ukraine were to be the main topics of the negotiations.
President Biden emphasized that the consequences of Congress's inaction on the issue of aid to Ukraine are terrible.
It is worth noting that the US has not been able to allocate funds for assistance to Ukraine for several months. Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson refuses to bring the bill to a vote.
