'Confiscation and genocide': Trump explains why US boycotting G20 in South Africa

US President Donald Trump accused South Africa of “genocide” and land confiscation. Because of this, the United States will not participate in the G20 meetings in South Africa, according to the president in TruthSocial.
“How could we be expected to go to South Africa for the very important G20 Meeting when Land Confiscation and Genocide is the primary topic of conversation? They are taking the land of white Farmers, and then killing them and their families. The Media refuses to report on this,” Trump wrote.
He also emphasized that the United States has suspended all contributions to South Africa.
“Is this where we want to be for the G20? I don’t think so!” the US president added.
As a reminder, the upcoming G20 leaders' summit will be held from November 21 to 22, 2025. South Africa will be the first African country to host the leaders of the G20.
Trump criticizes South Africa's policy
In January 2025, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa signed a law according to which the government can alienate land under certain circumstances, offering “zero compensation” in return. As explained by the South African authorities, the law does not allow for arbitrary land acquisition, and this requires the consent of the owner.
The United States has repeatedly criticized South Africa's policies on land, climate change, and the promotion of diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI). In February, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio boycotted a meeting of G20 foreign ministers in South Africa for this reason.
It is worth adding that the issue of land ownership is politically difficult in South Africa due to the history of colonialism and apartheid, when the rights of the black population to land were limited.
