Coffee with Coke: Surprising effect without caffeine shock

The combination of coffee and Coca-Cola may sound odd, but this mix is gaining popularity among fans of flavor experiments. People say the drink provides an energy boost without the sharp rise in blood pressure or nervous overstimulation that often follows strong coffee. Let’s look at how this drink affects the body and whether it’s harmful.
What’s known about this drink
Online, users note that the signature flavor notes of coffee pair perfectly with cola. The bitterness and acidity of coffee are ideally complemented by the caramel-like, sweet, slightly citrusy flavor of the carbonated drink.
You can use regular Coke or Zero, and in either case, there’s no need to add extra sweeteners to your cup to reduce the coffee’s bitterness.
Many people enjoy this combination because it increases caffeine levels more gradually and gently.
How to make coffee with Coke at home
Ingredients:
- 100 ml of espresso or strong black coffee (cooled)
- 150–200 ml of Coca-Cola
- Ice (optional)
- Lemon (for aroma)
- Sugar or flavored syrup (optional)
Preparation:
- Brew espresso or strong-filter coffee. Let it cool to room temperature or place it in the fridge.
- Fill a glass with ice.
- Add the coffee to the glass.
- Slowly pour in the Coke to preserve the fizz.
- Stir gently.
- Add a lemon wedge or a few drops of lemon juice to enhance the flavor.
You can also experiment with flavored syrups. Cherry, vanilla, caramel, and mocha are all great options since cola already has notes of those flavors.
How drink affects body
In a comment to RBC-Ukraine, Ukrainian psychiatrist, narcologist, and neurologist Yevhen Skrypnyk explained that this drink is indeed becoming more popular, especially among students.
Cola is sweet; it softens the bitterness of coffee, and together they complement each other. For experimenters, it’s a new taste.
"There’s iced tea, now they’ve come up with a new flavor—cold coffee with cola. People also enjoy the foam that forms when cola is added to coffee."
Both products contain caffeine - coffee and cola have a significant amount of sugar, making the combination something of an energy drink.
The person feels a burst of energy and may struggle to sleep at night. However, for people with anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, high blood pressure, angina, or arrhythmia, this drink can worsen their condition and trigger flare-ups.
A high dose of caffeine combined with a fizzy drink accelerates absorption in the stomach, negatively affecting the brain and heart.
It also alters stomach acid levels and may worsen gastritis or peptic ulcers. Plus, the high carbohydrate content is harmful and can lead to obesity.
The expert also warns that caffeine can be addictive, meaning a person will need increasingly larger doses to feel energized.
For these reasons, the doctor doesn't recommend consuming the coffee-and-cola combo.
