Many believe that watermelon is not the best for weight loss because it contains sugar and fructose, which can hinder shedding extra pounds. As it turns out, there are certain limitations to consuming watermelon while on a diet, according to coach Yurii Popko.

Can you eat watermelon while losing weight?

According to the expert, it's not advisable to associate any specific food with either weight loss or weight gain.

Watermelon consists of water and a bit of fiber, and depending on its ripeness, it contains about 6g of sugar per 100g of watermelon, of which approximately 3g is fructose.

The flesh is packed with nutrients: pectins, magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium, phosphorus, iron, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, folic acid, carotene, and ascorbic acid.

The daily norm of fructose is 30g. Therefore, theoretically, you can eat a kilogram of watermelon to meet your daily fructose intake.

There is a belief that the body doesn't process fructose well because insulin, which lowers blood sugar, does not respond to fructose, and it goes directly to the liver, which could lead to obesity in the long run. However, the coach said that this is not true.

Moreover, watermelon is 90% water, making it great for quenching thirst. Thanks to its high water and fiber content, watermelon also satisfies hunger.

Despite being a source of fast, simple carbohydrates, you can eat watermelon even at night because while we sleep, our bodies continue to work and burn the carbohydrates obtained from this fruit.

Who should avoid eating watermelons?

Watermelon should not be consumed by people with diabetes or those with impaired urine flow, especially in cases of urolithiasis.

It's also better to avoid watermelon in cases of chronic colitis, diarrhea, or exacerbation of pancreatic diseases.

If heart disease is accompanied by fluid retention in the body, watermelon should also be excluded from the diet.

You should not eat watermelon along with other carbohydrates, nor should you follow a watermelon diet.
