Cleaning the washing machine rubber seal is not just a matter of aesthetics, as regular maintenance extends the appliance's lifespan and ensures the cleanliness of clothes, notes Southern Living.
How often to clean rubber seal
Front-loading washing machines are more prone to issues with the rubber seal located near the drum when you open the door. In top-loading machines, you will see a seal near the lid. Cleaning the seal around the door is not required frequently, but you should plan deep cleaning monthly or every 30 wash cycles.
What to use for cleaning
Always wear gloves to protect your hands. For cleaning, you will need:
-
rubber gloves
-
white vinegar
-
warm water
-
small bowl
-
clean microfiber cloths
-
toothbrush
-
towels
Ensure the machine is empty, then mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water in a small bowl.
Wearing gloves, dip a clean cloth into the solution and wipe all surfaces, including areas between folds and seams. Do not forget edges. You can use fingers to open fold areas to better reach any debris. For areas with stubborn deposits, use a toothbrush dipped in solution.
Finally, wipe the seal with a clean towel. Leave the door open to ensure the seal dries completely.
Tips for keeping seal clean
To keep laundry smelling fresh, keep the rubber seal clean. Use a clean, dry cloth to wipe the rubber between loads to remove moisture, debris, and accumulated soap.
Leave the washing machine door open to allow the seal and drum to dry between uses. Remove wet laundry as soon as possible. Wet clothes can create a favorable environment for mold and mildew growth.
Do not use too much detergent, as excess suds can leave residue on the gasket and other machine parts and attract more dirt.
