A new school year is starting in Ukraine. According to the Ministry of Education and Science, this year, 3.5 million students will return to the classroom, according to the Ministry of Education and Science.

In-person and remote learning

More and more children are returning to in-person lessons: 2.3 million students will start attending school on-site. The number of those continuing with remote learning has decreased by 103,000 compared to last year.

Children abroad and in temporarily occupied territories

Despite the war, Ukrainian education remains accessible to those who are temporarily outside Ukraine. Over 300,000 students are abroad or in temporarily occupied territories but continue studying according to the Ukrainian curriculum, including the Ukrainian studies component. Among them are 302,889 children abroad and 35,361 in temporarily occupied territories.

Who decides the learning format?

The form of education depends on safety. In-person or hybrid learning is possible only where the school has a shelter or is located no more than 500 meters from one.

Investments in safe schools

The state is investing in educational infrastructure to allow as many children as possible to study in person. In frontline regions, 33 underground schools have already opened. By the end of the year, their number will increase to 156, and by 2026, another 47 are planned to be completed.

Additionally, over 600 school buses have been purchased to transport children to schools with shelters.

Also, the 2025–2026 school year will run until June 30. Schools have been given the right to set their own holiday schedules, so vacation dates may vary depending on the region and the security situation.
