The Christmas and New Year tree is the centerpiece of the holiday and, according to many beliefs, a powerful energy talisman. To ensure a successful year, our ancestors advised choosing decorations with meaning, as each symbol carries its own power.
RBC-Ukraine explains which ornaments can help attract what you desire — health, wealth, love — and which may bring negativity into the home and are better removed according to traditional signs.
Ornaments that bring happiness and prosperity
These decorations should be hung if you want to attract certain blessings into your life.
For financial well-being and abundance
- Coins and money. Small ornaments in the shape of coins, bills, or little paper money wrapped around branches symbolize profit.
- Harvest symbols. Ornaments in the form of nuts, pinecones, ears of grain, or fruits (apples, grapes) attract abundance and plenty.
For love and family harmony
- Hearts and angels. Heart-shaped ornaments strengthen romantic bonds and attract love. Angels symbolize protection, family comfort, and peace.
- Paired ornaments. Always hang two identical decorations next to each other (for example, two birds, two gnomes, two bells). This strengthens a union and attracts a partner for singles.
For luck and protection
- Balls. Round glass balls (especially silver or gold) are believed to absorb negative energy and prevent it from spreading.
- Bells. A symbol that drives away evil spirits with its chime and brings joy.
- Owl. A symbol of wisdom that helps in making the right decisions throughout the year.

Ornaments to avoid
According to folk beliefs, some decorations can bring misfortune and problems.
Broken or damaged ornaments
Cracks, chips, or chipped decorations, especially glass ones, are considered symbols of discord and troubles in the family. They are thought to attract health problems or quarrels.
What to do: They should be discarded, not saved for the next year.
Ornaments that resemble weapons or aggression
Although toy guns, swords, or aggressive figurines may look attractive, they symbolize conflicts, hostility, and disputes in the home.
What to do: Even if they are part of a collection, choose more peaceful symbols for your tree.
Ornaments in the shape of human skulls or sad faces
Any decoration that symbolizes death, sadness, or negative emotions can attract misfortune and illness.
What to do: Replace them with angels, cheerful faces, snowmen, or animal figurines.
Ornaments from someone else’s home
According to superstitions, an item taken from another home, especially if given without goodwill, can carry someone else’s negative energy into your house.
What to do: If you are unsure about the origin of an ornament, it’s better not to hang it.

Important tips for decorating
Color matters. Red attracts love and passion, gold and silver bring money and prosperity, and blue and white symbolize calm and health.
Start hanging decorations from the bottom up. This is believed to symbolize stability, standing firmly on your feet.
The top should have a star (symbol of the Christmas Star, leading to good) or an angel (symbol of protection). Never leave the top empty.
What the Red Horse favors
Natural materials: wood, clay, fabric, straw, dried fruits.
Bright colors: red, burgundy, gold, emerald.
Symbols of luck: horseshoe, bells, horse figurines.
Paired ornaments: hang two identical decorations next to each other — a symbol of harmony and partnership.
