Leading Chinese airlines have urged the US administration to abandon plans to ban their flights over Russian territory, Reuters reports.

The airlines warned that such a move would increase flight times, raise ticket prices, and disrupt certain routes.

Last week, the US Department of Transportation proposed prohibiting Chinese carriers from flying over Russia on routes to and from the United States. The department argued that shorter flight paths give American airlines a competitive disadvantage.

Russia has banned US and many other foreign airlines from flying over its territory in response to Washington's March 2022 ban on Russian flights over the US following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Chinese airlines were not restricted and used this advantage to increase their market share on international routes.

On Friday, October 10, a spokesperson for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that these restrictions do not promote interpersonal contacts.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump threatened China with restrictions on Boeing parts exports in response to Chinese sanctions. He emphasized that China depends on American aviation technology, including parts for its Boeing fleets.

RBC-Ukraine previously reported that Trump has once again intensified the trade confrontation with China, announcing an additional 100% tariff on imports from China and new export restrictions on critical software, set to take effect on November 1.
