China intends to strengthen the role of the Group of Friends of Peace for the political resolution of Russia’s war against Ukraine, Xi Jinping stated during a conversation with Brazilian President Lula da Silva.

"China and Brazil must continue to jointly address global problems, ensure the success of the UN Climate Change Conference in Belém, and strengthen the role of the Group of Friends of Peace in promoting the political resolution of the Ukrainian crisis," Xi Jinping noted.

He also emphasized that countries of the Global South must work together to support international justice and legality, observe the basic norms governing international relations, and protect the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries.

China’s attitude towards the war in Ukraine

Earlier, China declared its supposedly neutral position regarding the war in Ukraine. Beijing provided humanitarian aid to Ukraine. At the same time, China maintains close cooperation with Russia in the trade sphere. Chinese companies supply Moscow with dual-use goods.

Last year, China and Brazil presented their so-called “peace plan” for Ukraine and are trying to promote it at the UN. However, Ukraine rejects alternative peace proposals.

Additionally, at the end of September last year, China announced the creation, along with countries from the Global South, of the Friends of Peace platform. It is aimed at the so-called political settlement of the war in Ukraine.
